Teaching Philosophy

As a flute teacher, I provide students with a captivating musical experience in a safe and inviting environment. Students of all backgrounds and abilities are challenged and valued as an individual student and as a member of my studio. Through studying music and the flute, students are shaped into hard-working, confident, and open-minded members of society.

Lessons are structured with a freedom to explore the depths of each individual's creativity and skill. Through an open dialogue within lessons, students are asked what they want to learn to ensure their interests and needs are met during our time together. Preparation for auditions, solo and ensemble, and other performance opportunities leave students with a feeling of ease in high stress performance situations. Viewing mistakes as a learning opportunity to problem solve and understand ourselves creates a low-stress environment for students to learn at their own pace.

Some students prefer to use our time together to learn fun Disney songs or learn how to play their favorite song on the radio by ear, some choose to use lessons to prepare for seating auditions in band and memorizing marching band music, others use our lesson time to prepare for larger ensembles outside of their school or to audition for college music programs. I am here to help guide you through achieving your goals while having fun! Music can be serious, but it doesn’t always have to be — it can and should be enjoyable. As a teacher, my goal is for every student to leave their lesson with a smile and a feeling of accomplishment!
